Discharge Valves
for industrial central vacuum systems.

The selection of the type of discharge valve is dependent on the job it is expected to do.  Below is a listing of the most common vac system discharge devices with basic criteria for their selection.

Vortex
Clear Action
Gate Valve

Slide Gate Valves for Batch Discharge

These valves are used for batch discharging material from a vessel.  Material collects until a high level is reached, the system is shut down, then discharged manually.

Click the link to read about the VORTEX Clear Action pneumatic gate valve.  There are manual gate valves and many other special application batch discharge valves available.

Some materials bridge too easily (like carbon black, paper fibers, and wood chips), and an unusually large slide gate would be required.  For these materials, use a continuous discharge device instead.

MEYERS
Heavy Duty
Rotary Valve

Rotary Air Locks for Continuous Discharge

Rotary type valves are continuous discharge type valves; material  storage is external to the system.

These valves are sized by the expected material volumetric flow rate.  Normally, a 30 - 70% efficiency is used to discount the theoretical material flow of a specific sized valve.  This accounts for the way material "flows" in and out of the valve as it operates.

For abrasive or high temperature material, rotary type valves are not suitable - use a flapgate type valve instead.

PLATTCO
Flapgate
Valve

Flapgate Air Locks for Continuous Discharge

Flapgates are another type of continuous discharge device.  These valves are nearly indestructible, and we use them to replace rotary valves where abrasion or high temperature is a criterion.

If the valves are very large, or if the interstitial volume is large, then the "pocket" may require to be equalized before each actuation in order to not affect vacuum performance or filter cleaning performance.

The material volumetric flow is required to size these valves.

A word about butterfly valves:  Butterfly valves are rarely useful for central vacuum system discharge valves, although they sure are cheap.  But because central vacuum systems will always pickup rags and other "non-dust" items, the disk in butterfly valves make these valves unsuitable for trouble-free discharging.
