General Design Details

SIHI Liquid Ring vacuum pumps are high performance positive displacement type designed for continuous duty service at 28" Hg.

Liquid ring vacuum pumps are used in applications where the material is either very hot (200 to 600ºF), so that an intercooler would be required with a rotary lobe vacuum, or where we are conveying slurry and mud so that the conveying air is wet.

Principles of Operation

The liquid ring pump takes its name from its principle of operation.  A shaft mounted multi-blade impeller is mounted eccentrically within a round housing or casing (see Figure 1).  A cool liquid - usually water - is introduced into the round casing.

Figure 1

Centrifugal action of the rotating impeller forces the service liquid toward the periphery of the pump casing forming a "ring of liquid".  The depth of the service liquid is maintained so that the impeller blades are completely immersed to their root at one extreme, and all but their tips are exposed at the other extreme.

During the first 180 degrees of rotation as the liquid recedes from the blades, gas or vapor is drawn into the suction port.  As the impeller rotates a further 180 degrees, the gas is compressed and is discharged.

Since there is a discrete pocket of air compressed with each rotation, this is a positive displacement vacuum pump.  And since the liquid ring is such an effective internal seal, this type of vacuum pump can achieve higher vacuum than dry pumps.

Since the service liquid absorbs the heat generated by compression, discharge air is cool.  A small supply of fresh cool liquid ensures that the vacuum producer runs cool at all times.

SIHI XBA Vacuum packages are available up to 4500 icfm @ 28" Hg.  (350 Hp)

Packages are supplied with all required accessory devices including tanks, valves, and separator silencers.  Designs are available for once through systems, partial recirculation systems, and total recirculation systems.

Special Features

The main benefit of a liquid ring vacuum over an equal sized rotary lobe vacuum pump is the liquid ring's truly quiet operation.  The main drawback is the sealing liquid required which can be 10 gpm even with partial recirc.  Furthermore, liquid ring pumps use more energy at lower vacuum levels because the pump still works against the sealing liquid.  In fact, system motor amperage remains virtually the same from 10" Hg. through 25" Hg.

Other features include:

  • Robust construction means extra long service life  These units last virtually forever with absolutely minimum service and low maintenance cost.

  • handles entrained liquids without damage to the pump.

  • quiet and vibration free operation with noise levels far and away below rotary lobe pumps

  • continuous duty operation at 28" Hg.

  • low starting torque
