General Design Details

The Wallenstein "Sliding Vane" Rotary Compressor is a positive displacement, low volume, high performance air pump that can operate as either a compressor or a vacuum pump. When operating as a vacuum pump, vacuum ranges down to 28" Hg. with a curve not quite as flat as a liquid ring type compressor.  As a pressure pump, the system attains 15 PSI.

These pumps are primarily used in liquid handling vacuum systems, with the added benefit of being able to pressurize a tank to empty it.

Principles of Operation

This pump consists of a slotted, single rotor mounted between two bearing housings.  The rotor is arranged eccentrically in a cylinder casing so that a crescent shape volume is created between the inlet and the outlet ports (see Figure 1).

Figure 1

Vanes guided in slots are forced against the cylinder wall by centrifugal force.  Air trapped in the air pocket created by the vanes is compressed as the pocket travels in its eccentric path.  Since each pocket of gas is equal in displacement for each revolution, this is a positive displacement pump.

The pump can attain higher sustained vacuum levels than standard rotary lobe pumps because the vanes adjust to thermal expansion.  However, these pumps do run very hot when working at high vacuum.

Cooling the vane tips of these pumps is important.  Cooling may be by forced air over, flood oil or drip oil depending on the service conditions expected.  With oil cooling, smoke can be expected, so smoke control systems may be required.

Wallenstein pumps were first produced in 1969, and were rapidly accepted by the pumping industry because of the pump's simple design and rugged build.  Units are available to 1000 cfm with up to 28" Hg. continuous.

Special Features

  • Robust design suitable for all day contractor use.

  • Continuous duty operation at maximum vacuum

  • Longest vane wear allowance of any other unit on the market means long service life.

  • Unique bearing arrangement allows bearing removal of endplate without disturbing the bearing fit

  • TWO YEAR WARRANTY
