DuroVac inDepth - Primary Filter

Here's what makes the filtration sub-system of the DuroVac so unique.

Primary Filtration System

This is the heart of the system.   The filters are what establishes its niche.  It is the filters that allow this unit to compete so well.  The unit has been designed to operate so that there is no drop off in performance as the canister fills.

This means that the DuroVac runs without interruption to clean the filters just like a pulse cleaned system costing thousands more!.  The filters are fully reconditioned by means of an external shaker mechanism after every fill.  Even carbon black, iron oxide, and other tough-to-handle ultra-fine powders can be handled .. with ease.

Most customers that come to us have been driven nuts by vacuum filters that blind and so deliver poor performance.  Because of the poor filters, it requires an enormous amount of time and money to keep their vacuum systems.

The main filters in the system allows a particulate capture efficiency of 99.997% at 0.4 micron as standard!  No one else does this as standard, but we had 50% of people upgrading, so we now offer this as our standard.   This media ensures that there is an excellent material release characteristic.   Even wet material doesn’t affect the filters much (or as much).   For the small cost to provide premium filters standard, this media goes a long way to providing a more "goof proof" machine.

Most customers are familiar with "Gortex" filters.  A polyester or polypro filter media is treated with a one micron (that’s billionth of a meter, folks!) thick coating of PTFE, more commonly known as Teflon which is a Dupont registered trade mark.  Our media has a similar filtration efficiency to Gortex, but it’s ½ the price and is washable as well.

The filters are more expensive to replace:  US$525.00 per set of 15 vs. US$410.00 for the old standard media (16 oz. polypropylene, glazed inside), but rarely do filters need to be replaced more often than once every two years.  In fact, many of our early machines still haven't required a filter replacement!

The filters have "snap bands" or "cuffs" at the bottom and they snap into place in the bag plate without tools.  It takes about 20 minutes to change out a set.  Very simple, but similar to the Hoffman/Lamson/Spencer crowd.  Our cuffs are made of tough reinforced material, to protect against abrasion, definitely NOT standard with the others.

Material is first cyclonically separated, so more than 95% of powders are removed from the air stream before the main filters.  Furthermore, the DuroVac features a hardened steel wearplate with multiple deflectors that force material down away from the filters.  And finally, an internal protective baffle ring protects the bottom of the filters (the cuffs) from wear and increases the expected service life of the filter bags to more than two years.

Material collects on the inside of the filters; when you open the service door, you’re accessing the clean side.  That means changing the filters isn't too bad -- except if you wait 'til they break or tear, then, well yes, it will be a dirty job. Moral? Be proactive!

There are numerous options for filter media, but the standard filters are suitable for 99% of our customers.  All filters include a copper ground strap that transfers static to the bag plate.

The External Shaker Mechanism

The big difference between our shaker and others is that ours works! The filters are hung from a swinging assembly attached to an external shaker arm.   The external arm delivers a violent side to side shake which very effectively cleans the filters  Other units clean their filters with a useless up and down shake.  (Okay, I'll be fair, Spencer units have a similar side to side shaker).

The filters do not need shaking until the collection canister fills. For day to day cleaning, the filters can pretty much be ignored.
