The Vacuum Producer

The DuroVac uses a SUTORBILT positive displacement vacuum pump by GARDNER DENVER, model LEGEND 5LP. The 15 Hp unit produces 360 acfm @ 12" Hg at 18A (assuming 460V operation), and the 20 Hp unit produces 500 acfm @ 12" Hg.

Competitive systems using centrifugal vacuum pumps produce about the same air flow at only 8" Hg. because they are significantly less mechanically efficient.

We run the 15 Hp at only 1350 rpm, and the 20 Hp at only 1800 rpm. The maximum allowable rpm for the 5LP is 2600 rpm, so the DuroVac vacuum producer is run very slowly. This, in combination with a rpm tuned, custom designed silencer, allows us to achieve an exceptionally low noise rating for a PD vacuum pump - just 83 dBa at full load for the 15 Hp, and just 85 dBa for the 20 Hp. Admittedly, the 20 Hp rating may be too much for some locations.

The DuroVac was specifically designed for continuous duty at full load.  Since the vacuum pumps are running so slowly, we achieve tremendous equipment life - I estimate a useful service life exceeding fifteen years, and that assumes the body dies before the vacuum pump.

We lubricate the pump with synthetic oil: AEON 40 grade gear oil. This oil need only be changed every 4000 hours, certainly not more than once per year. The drive end is greased once every 500 hrs.

If anything should go wrong, we stock the vacuum pumps for immediate shipping. Change out should not exceed 2 hours. In production for nine years, and over two hundred shipped, we have never had a failed vacuum pump!
